The luxury car business has become an ultra competitive marketplace. Style, technology and brand equity are all pushed to the limit in the never ending quest to increase and protect market share. The Frankfurt Auto Show is considered one of the highlight events on the auto show circuit and luxury car brands reserve their most important debuts for this venue. This year does not disappoint as new SUVs / Crossovers, high performance and hybrid models hit the pedestal. Here are some standout debuts from Germany:
2017 Audi S4
Audi’s best selling A4 sedan is due for a revamp and we are looking forward to seeing Audi’s new squared edge design language. As always, Audi will offer the S4 super high performance version on the new platform and showed off the hot rod sedan at Frankfurt.
Audi drops the supercharger in favor of a more efficient turbocharging system. The 3.0 liter V6 blasts out 354 horsepower which is 14 more than the supercharged engine. 0-100 km/h times are a respectable 4.7 seconds but the real fun is the 396 ft/lbs of torque available in the lower 1300-4500 rpm range. Coming soon to an autobahn near you.
2016 Jaguar F-Pace
The long awaited Jaguar SUV comes to market in the next few months and a full production version was on display at Frankfurt. The F-Pace is all Jaguar from the sculpted lines to the chrome accents to the opulent interior. Performance is one of the F-Pace’s core competency with a supercharged V6 providing 340 horsepower. A higher performance S version is in the works.
We think the F-Pace will be a huge success for JLR and will become their ‘high volume’ model as demand for luxury SUVs and crossovers continues to boom.
Porsche Mission E Concept
The brand from Stuttgart surprised the press corp in Frankfurt with the reveal of the ridiculously high performance Mission E Concept. The all electric system delivers 600 horsepower to all the wheels while managing a range topping 310 miles. 0-100 km/h times are just under 3.5 seconds which puts most high performance gasoline engines to shame.
Porsche says the Mission E will get to 80% charge in only 15 minutes which is about 50% faster than Tesla’s Supercharger system. It may only be a concept but look for Mission E elements in future hybrid and all-electric Porsche models.
2017 Bentley Bentayaga
Back in 2012, Bentley stunned the world with its ‘uniquely’ designed EXP F 9 SUV concept. Even though the original concept was not well received, Bentley was undeterred and developed the more Bentley-esque Bentayaga. As its first entry into the lucrative SUV market, Bentley spared no expense and will offer full customization and Mulliner. specifications on the Bentayaga.
No pricing or specifications have been released yet but we do know that future Bentayaga owners can opt for a luxury hamper set that includes a mini-fridge, fine china and crystal glassware. We estimate Bentley’s SUV to be priced inthe $200k range but even at that price point, Bentley hopes that the Bentayaga will be a volume seller.
