Porsche has always been synonymous with high performance. What was always lacking in the lineup was a true supercar that could compete head on with machines from McLaren, Lamborghini and Ferrari. Designers went to work on a super high tech exotic sports car reminiscent of the development of the 959 back the 1980’s. Porsche unveiled the 918 concept at the Frankfurt Auto Show in 2010 and began production of the limited edition sports car in 2013 as a 2014 model.
In keeping with the mystique, only 918 Spyders were built and most were delivered in the United States with an initial list price of $847,000. The 918 is Porsche’s second plug-in hybrid and uses cutting edge charging and discharging technology. While this machine may have Eco-friendly technology, it has the soul and performance of a true track car.
The Spyder is motivated by a 4.6 liter V8 engine that which is mated to 2 high performance electric motors for a combined power output of 887 horsepower. The engines are mounted in a lightweight composite body and chassis that helps the 918 achieve a top speed of 340 km/h and 0-100 km/h times of an unbelievable 2.5 seconds.
The 918 is a rolling showcase of Porsche research and development. Several different drive modes means the 918 can be driven on city streets and then revert to the track with the push of a button. The Spyder can also be switched to all electric mode with a class leading top speed of 93 km/h. Porsche’s double clutch PDK transmission optimizes power delivery to the wheels and provides intricate shifting patterns depending on the mode selected. Race bred and track ready electromechanical brakes ensure efficient stopping power while recouping lost energy.
THE BLACKBOOK is pleased to announce the availability of 3 of these fine examples of Porsche performance and technology.
